Early Stages: Power Writing Program
Grants: $60,000 over three years (2007/09)
About the Project
This grant supports Early Stages’ Power Writing Program which seeks to
“foster literate, ethical and critically conscious young men and women who
will be fully prepared to participate in our society. “If you do not learn
how to write your own life story, someone else will write it for you.” This
is the motto that Power Writing brings to each class presenting a curriculum
of empowerment to New York City high school students, so many of whom suffer
from the profound disempowering effects of internalized racial oppression.
The program creates a safe space, a creative community for students to
express, test and refine their worldviews and to integrate their creativity,
passion and ethical strength in the personal process of life building.
