About the Project
Made in L.A. follows the remarkable story of three Latina immigrants working in Los Angeles garment sweatshops as they embark on a three-year odyssey to win basic labor protections from a trendy clothing retailer. In intimate verité style, Made in L.A. reveals the impact of the struggle on each woman's life as they are gradually transformed by the experience. Compelling, humorous, deeply human, Made in L.A. is a story about immigration, the power of unity, and the courage it takes to find your voice.Made in L.A. premiered nationally on PBS' POV series and has garnered much critical acclaim. During the first year following the broadcast, the filmmakers attended and/or supported hundreds of screenings with stakeholders including national partners, community organizations and educators, bringing together diverse audiences and catalyzing dialogue around local and national issues of low wage work, immigrants' rights, consumer awareness, women's empowerment and community organizing for social and economic justice.
In the current phase of outreach and community engagement, the filmmakers and their outreach team are embarking on (I) an online/viral campaign using segments of the film to engage targeted audiences, and (II) a community screening campaign to empower national partners, community organizations, student groups and faith-based groups to use Made in L.A. as a vehicle for public education and social action around issues in their communities.
